Latin America 2005: Forecast of Growth, Inflation and Foreign Exchange
Latin American economies are booming, and the speed of the growth has taken almost everyone by surprise. Brazil, whose economy stagnated last year, grew by 6% in the third quarter of 2004; Argentina now expects 8% growth in 2004, and Colombia forecasts more than 4% growth. Foreign investment in Mexico and Brazil are up sharply. But Latin growth faces serious threats. Much of the growth is fueled by exports and is dependent on low foreign exchange rates. And the high rates of growth fuel the nemesis of Latin economies: inflation. Our panel of experts will examine the prospects-and risks--for Latin economies in 2005, and forecast the winners and losers. Panelists: Jeffrey W. Rubin - Associate Professor of History. Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs, Boston University, Boston, MA Ricardo C.
